Busy rewriting my name

You heard his version at every table,
The same old story, polished and stable
Collecting sympathy, collecting praise,
Building a kingdom from twisted remains
He talks to people I’ve loved before,
Keeps my name alive long after the war
I’m blocked everywhere, every door locked tight,
But somehow my friends stay in his sight
‘Cause it was never about letting go,
It was always about needing to know
Every step I take, every move I make,
Watching from a distance for control’s sake

So this is for the ones who believed him,
Who only heard one side of the flame
You saw a victim standing before you,
While he was busy rewriting my name

He painted a picture that never was me,
Turned lies into truth through repetition
And the louder he talked, the smaller I seemed,
Until his story became your conviction

He knows how to look honest and broken,
How to hide poison inside gentle words spoken
How to smile while planting doubt in your head,
And make you question things he never said
So I became the crazy one somehow,
The villain in a story he’s still telling now
But nobody saw what happened backstage,
Nobody noticed who was writing the page
‘Cause control wears a beautiful disguise,
Wrapped in concern and innocent eyes.
And surveillance doesn’t look so cruel,
When other people become the tool

So this is for the ones who believed him,
Who only heard one side of the flame.
You saw a victim standing before you,
While he was busy rewriting my name

He painted a picture that never was me,
Turned lies into truth through repetition
And the louder he talked, the smaller I seemed,
Until his story became your conviction

I’m not asking you to choose between us,
I’m not asking for revenge or defense
Just ask yourself why he’s still talking,
While I’ve been trying to leave it all since
And if the truth is really on his side,
Why does he keep campaigning for the crowd?
Why does he need an audience so badly,
To say the things he says out loud?

So this is for the ones who believed him,
The ones who never questioned the tale
I’m not the person he created for you,
I’m the one who survived and prevailed

He can block my number, block my shadow,
But he can’t decide who I am
And one day the mask slips on its own,
When there’s nobody left to condemn

You heard his version
You never heard me
And that’s the difference
Between a story…
And the truth
